This volume was designed as a form of a Christmas card, with the front wrap reading 'A Few Sketches by the Late Randolph Caldecott, with ........ Kind Regards. Wishing you A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year'. No prior owner's ink to the title, indicating who gifted this volume.
Illustrated with eight plates by Caldecott, from his work 'Breton Folk'.
Undated, dated from Rodey Engen's 1976 bibliography 'Randolph Caldecott, Lord of the Nursery', page 98.
Bookplate of Charles Plumptre Johnson to the front paste down. Johnson was the son of the Physician-Extraordinary to Queen Victoria. Himself he was known as a yachter, owning a fine fleet of modern yawls, including the 'Moonbeam'. His impressive library extended to some 6,000 volumes.
Bookplate of W. A. Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey to the recto of the front endpaper.
Condition
In a half crushed morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards, bound by Zaehnsdorf. Externally, smart. Small patch of rubbing to the front board. Small bump to the fore edge of the rear board. A few faint marks to the boards. Bookplate to the front paste down and to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
