The second edition of Baedeker's travel guide to Lower Egypt. In the first of this two-part guide to Egypt, Karl Baedeker discusses Cairo, Suez, and the Sinai Peninsula. With sixteen maps, and seven plates, collated and complete Established in 1827, the German publishing house were pioneers of worldwide travel handbooks. By drawing on specialist knowledge, their guides provide brief historical and cultural introductions, alongside detailed information about travel routes, the available facilities, and descriptions of attractions and noteworthy buildings. Baedeker was bought by MairDumont in 1997. Prior owner's ink inscription to the title page, 'A. R. Bulman 1892'. One page of publisher's adverts to front pastedown.
Condition
In the publisher's original red cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, more so to the spine, with a tear in the cloth at the rear joint. The head and tail of the spine are beginning to fray a little. The front hinge has failed so that the front board flaps away from the text block. The rear hinge is starting and is tender. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned but clean.
