Written by Sir Robert Lambert Playfair, a British diplomat and author, 'The Scourge of Christendom' provides a record and history of Algiers, examining the struggles and revolutions for and within the city, primarily centering on British relations with the state.

Rubbing to front and rear joint. Bumping and rubbing to extremities. Tidemarks to front and rear board. Spotting to front board. Front hinge is is tender. Splitting to rear hinge. Copy is missing front free-endpaper. Author's dedication and signature to the remaining free-endpaper. Folding map frontispiece with protective tissue guard. Light spots to the fore edge of the recto of the map frontispiece. Internally, generally firmly bound with binding strained in places. Pages are slightly age toned at the edges but are otherwise very bright and clean. The odd spot throughout. Occasional uncut pages to the top edge. Repair to the bottom extremity of page 199/200.
