What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce
A first edition of this very scarce nineteenth century Act of Parliament. The Corrupt and Illegal Practices Prevention Act was created to eradicate intimidation and bribery in the British voting system. As well as criminalising bribery, the act capped election expenses which from 1883 had to be published to ensure transparency. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper, 'J. J. Hammond. 20 Nov 1885.' With a sticker from Evison & Bridge Law Stationers & Printers to the front paste down.
Condition
In the publisher's original orange cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Rubbed to the boards and the spine, with a couple of white marks to the front board. Lightly bumped to the head and tail of the spine, with a small tear in the cloth at the rear joint near the tail, and a slightly larger tear to the front joint near the head. The front hinge is starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from some light scattered foxing to the front and the rear of the volume, pages are generally clean if a little age-toned.
