With the bookplate of W.A. Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey to the front pastedowns. William Foyle founded Foyles bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex. Beeleigh housed his library, one of the largest private libraries in England.
Condition
In half calf signed bindings with marbled paper covered boards. With gilt detailing to back strips. Rubbing to head of volume II back strip, otherwise externally excellent. Front hinges of both volumes strained, but firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Spotting to fore edges of text block. Internally, firmly bound. Significant spotting to first and last few leaves, with pages otherwise clean and bright.
