What Our Customers Say...

Description

Early Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Rebound

After Dark and Heart and Science, two works by nineteenth-century English author and playwright, Wilkie Collins.

Heart and Science is a heartfelt novel about a young doctor who falls in love with an heiress. When the heiress falls ill, the doctor cures her using unconventional brain treatment. The work attacks the act of vivisection, the process of performing operations on live animals for experimentation. This edition was published in 1884 by Chatto & Windus.

After Dark is a collection of short stories, originally published in Household Words, a magazine edited by Charles Dickens. This edition was published circa 1900 by The Gresham Publishing Company, and it contains six full page illustrated plates.

Collated and complete.

Heart and Science contains an ink signature from a previous owner to the half title page, dated 1894.

These two works are uniformly bound in red half morocco.

Condition

Handsomely bound in half morocco with cloth covered boards. Externally, very smart, with some light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Some light shelf wear to the boards. Previous owner's ink signature to the half title page of 'Heart and Science'. Internally, both volumes firmly bound. The title page of 'Heart and Science' has the top right corner clipped off, ostensibly to remove a previous owner's ink signature. Light scattered spotting to the first and last few pages of each volume, and the odd bit of spotting throughout, though many pages remain bright and clean.
