Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

Present here is the 1884 seventy-third thousandth of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland', first published in 1865, and the 1887 fifty-ninth thousandth of 'Through the Looking-Glass', first published in 1871.

With both volumes featuring the charming vignette illustrations of John Tenniel.

Upon the original publication of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 1865, Tenniel was far more well-known than Carroll, owing to his successful career as an illustrator and cartoonist, including many pieces for the satirical periodical 'Punch'.

Mathematician and author Lewis Carroll was best known for these work, which are credited the best example of literary nonsense. Whilst these volumes were initially intended for children, the word play, logic and fantastical themes present have interested and delighted scholars since its publication.

With each volume retaining the original half title.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Bumping to spine heads and tails. Discolouration to 'Wonderland' back strip and boards, with paper residue to front board, and losses of cloth to the back strip. Joints starting, and a touch tenderly held. Front hinge reinforced. 'Looking Glass' boards comparatively bright, with light discolouration to back strip. Rear joint starting, but firmly held. Front hinge strained, and tenderly held by two cords only. Inscription to half title. Internally, bindings strained throughout. Pages bright and generally clean, with instances of handling marks to page perimeters.
