An undated copy, dated from Jisc 1883. The first edition of this work, identified from inscription dated 1884, which precedes all later printings. An illustrated volume tracing the history of African discovery and exploration by C. E. Bourne, from the earliest times until the death of Livingstone. Chapters look at explorations such as that of James Bruce in Abyssinia, Mungo Park and Clapperton in Western Africa, and Livingstone and Stanley's journeys among others. 

With illustrations in black and white, as well as a double page coloured map, one plate in colour.

Condition

In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally generally sound with minor shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, light soiling to the boards and spine. School prize inscription to the recto of the coloured map, dated 1884. Internally, the binding is generally firm. Light odd spot to the odd leaf, otherwise the pages are generally bright and clean. With illustrations in black and white, as well as a double page coloured map and a coloured plate.
