What Our Customers Say...

Description

Folding Maps, Illustrated

The fifteenth edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding.

Loosely inserted is a page of sketches, a programme of music for July 1893 at 36, Lowndes Square, and a dramatis personae for a performance of Twelfth Night.

Illustrated with twelve plans, thirteen folding plans and six folding maps. Collated. Lacking the folding map to the rear pocket; otherwise complete.

A travel guide to northern Italy, this is from the famous series of 'Murray's Handbooks for Travellers', a series of travel guide books published in London by John Murray beginning in 1836. This guide comprises information for Turin, Milan, Pavia, Cremona, The Italian Lakes, Bergamo, Brescia, Verona, Mantua, Vicenza, Padua, Venice, Ferrara, Bologna, Ravenna, Rimini, Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Genoa, The Riviera and the intermediate towns and routes.

According to scholar James Buzard, the Murray style 'exemplified the exhaustive rational planning that was as much an ideal of the emerging tourist industry as it was of British commercial and industrial organization generally'. These works are thus a fascinating insight into both the mentality of those who would have purchased them, and the locations in question.

A fifty-two page 'Murray's Handbook Advertiser' to the rear.
