A very scarce first edition.

Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece, with four plates of maps, three of which are folding. Collated, complete.

A lengthy biography of Robert Clive, the first British Governor of the Bengal Presidency, and a significant figure in the foundation of the British East India Company rule in Bengal. Clive's actions on behalf of the Company have made him one of Britain's most controversial colonial figures.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, otherwise externally excellent. Hinges strained, but generally firmly held. Internally, binding lightly tender throughout. Pages clean and bright.
