What Our Customers Say...
Colour Plates, First Edition, Folding Maps, Illustrated
The first English language edition of Danish Navy Commander Andreas Hovgaard's account of Adolf Erik Nordenskiold's Vega Expedition, where Hovgaard was in charge of both meteorological and geomagnetic observations.
Translated from the original Danish by H. L. Braekstad.
Illustrated with three colour maps, two of which are folding, and a further forty seven plates and vignette illustrations consisting of both views of the expedition's surroundings, and portraits of those on board. Collated, complete.
The finest achievement amongst Nordenskiold's many Arctic explorations was the Vega expedition, where the SS Vega became the first vessel to circumnavigate the Eurasian continent, and the first ship to complete a voyage through the Northern Passage.
With the bookplate of the James Hadden Circulating Library to the front pastedown, and no further library markings within, and a thirty-two page publisher's catalogue to the rear.
In this richly illustrated work, Commander Hovgaard provides a thrilling first hand account of a pioneering voyage.
In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding, with gilt title. Back strip faded, with bumping to spine head and tail, and board extremities. Front and rear hinges starting, with boards holding firm. Circulating library bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound, though strained towards centre of text block.
