In a half calf binding, with a decorative gilt spine. All edges, end papers and paste downs marbled. Ink inscription to the first blank page of each book, dated 1887. Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay (1800-1859) was a British historian and Whig politician, who served as the Secretary at War between 1839 and 1841, and as the Paymaster-General between 1846 and 1848. The Miscellaneous Writings and Speeches of Lord Macaulay (published 1882) contains a collection of Macaulay's miscellaneous writings and speeches, including his contributions to Knight's Quarterly Magazine, to The Edinburgh Review, and to Encyclopaedia Britannica, and poems and inscriptions. Lord Macaulay's Essays and Lays of Ancient Rome (published 1885) contains a selection of Macaulay's essays, including his famous work 'Lays of Ancient Rome', a series of narrative poems recounting heroic episodes of Roman history. This volume includes 'Milton', 'Hallam's Constitutional History', 'Southey's Edition of the Pilgrim's Progress', 'Moore's Life of Lord Byron', and more.
Condition
In a half calf binding. Externally very smart, with minimal rubbing to the extremities and joints, though a little of the leather to the volume containing Essays and Lays is lifting to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the odd spot to the first and last few pages.
