What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

First UK edition of this collection of African American folktales compiled and adapted by Joel Chandler Harris for children. Many of these stories are didactic, and want to represent the struggle in the Southern United States, and more specifically in the plantations. The stories are written in a dialect which was his interpretation of Deep South African-American language of the time, for which he has endured some controversy since its publication.

With illustrations by F. Church and J. Moser, numerous in text as well as a frontispiece and three full page plates. Collated, complete.

With thirty-two leaves of publisher's advertisements to rear.

Condition

Endpapers loose but present. Previous owner's gift inscription to half title, dated 1881. Binding split to p. 128. Pages generally clean throughout.
