What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce

The first edition in book form of this short story collection from George R. Sims, an accomplished and successful dramatist and poet, a man who bred bulldogs and had a wide circle of literary and artistic friends. By the time of his death, however, he has gambled most of his fortune away.

Consisting of twenty short stories, with titles including 'Devil's Face', 'The Magic Pill', 'The Bond of Blood', and 'His Righteous Doom'.

Sims was a strong voice for reform, dramatizing the plight of London's poor and slums in short stories that appeared in The Sunday Dispatch, the Daily News, and other papers. Many of these stories were later published in book form, as is the case with this volume.

With the bookplate of the 'Grand National "Referee" Competition' to the front pastedown, dated March 20th 1891.

A lovely copy of this very scarce work.

Condition

Rebacked in calf, retaining the original pictorial paper covered boards. Endpapers renewed. Front board exceptionally bright, with minor rubbing, with light handling marks and discolouration to rear board. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Spotting to title page, which is restored to gutter. Pages generally clean and bright, with the odd light handling mark, and more significant spotting to the rear.
