What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Leather Binding, Original Binding

The first edition of this book of eminent Scotsmen, compiled and arranged by Scottish journalist and historian Joseph Irving, the writer of many works of Scottish history.

This book is arranged alphabetically, listing the names and short biographies of Scotsmen 'eminent for achievements in arms and arts, church and state, law, legislation, and literature, commerce, science, travel, and philanthropy'.

In his prefatory note, Irving humorously states his awareness that some vitriol may be directed his way if this work is interpreted as 'intended to administer to national vanity by exhibiting the achievements of Scotsmen in the way of challenge to other divisions in the kingdom'.

With the blind stamp of the Free Public Library, Wigan, to the tail of the title page.

Condition

In the original quarter morocco binding, with cloth covered boards. Marks and bumping to board perimeters, resulting in small losses to the cloth. Internally, firmly bound. Small losses to title page perimeters. Pages age toned to perimeters, but otherwise generally clean.
