Description

Fine Binding, Leather Binding

An attractively bound eleven volume set of the works of Charles Kingsley. The set includes: Alton Locke (2 volumes), Hereward the Wake (2 volumes), Two Years Ago (2 volumes), Yeast (1 volume), Westward Ho! (2 volumes), and Hypatia (2 volumes). Charles Kingsley was born in 1819, son of the Reverend Charles Kingsley. Following in his fathers footsteps, in his adulthood, Kingsley pursued the ministry. Seeing great success, he was later appointed as the chaplain to Queen Victoria. This royal connection continued as he also became the private tutor to the Prince of Wales, a position he held whilst serving as Professor of Modern History at Cambridge University. Over the course of his life Charles Kingsley had an impressive ministerial and academic career, holding numerous prestigious roles throughout his lifetime. A strong believer in the church and in education, Kingsley own politics and religious stance often informed his literary works. Other beliefs he held, which form themes in his writings include, his belief in social reform, his sympathy towards Darwin's theories and 'The Origins of Species', as well as his criticism of Catholicism. Two volumes have the previous owners ink inscription to the front endpapers which reads, 'Mrs Charles Whitlock'. A lovely set of works, perfect for those with an interest in the works of this important Victorian author.
