Description

Folding Plates, Leather Binding

Edited and compiled by William H. Turner of the Bodleian Library and overseen by town clerk, Robert S. Hawkins, this volume comprises a detailed example of the record of the City of Oxford between the years 1509 to 1583, from the reign of Henry VIII through Edward VI, Mary I and Queen Elizabeth I. Contains detail of controversies between the city and the University of Oxford, documents relating to MPs, mayors and officers, the Freemen of the city, judicial proceedings and management of city property. Contains a wonderful folding frontispiece facsimile of the council-book preserved in the city archives. From the library of Reverend Thomas Barns, with a charming bookplate. Left by him as a bequest to the William Salt Library in Stafford, December 1925.

Condition

In a quarter morocco binding. Externally generally smart, some bumping to the extremities and wear to the boards. Ownership bookplate and library bookplate to front pastedown. Internally firmly bound, pages bright and clean bar the odd spot.
