A very scarce work, here in its first edition and with numerous illustrations.

Signed 'from the author' to the title page.

This work consists of a series of lectures on Egypt delivered on January 20th, 1880 by John Fowler at Tewksbury. Born to a wealthy Quaker family, Fowler studied thirty languages, learning Egyptian, Arabic, and other Eastern tongues. The British Museum currently holds several artefacts from Egypt supplied by Fowler.

This volume was once held by the Harpen House African Library, as identified by ink annotations throughout.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Water marks to front board. Fading to spine, with significant bumping to spine head and tail. Cloth splitting to rear joint, with joint itself holding firm. Pastedowns and free endpapers replaced. Internally, firmly bound. Signed by author to title page. Numerous ink annotations throughout, to margins and half title. Pages otherwise clean and generally bright.
