The third edition of this work, published in the same year as the first edition.

Mark Twain's travel account of a journey undertaken across central and southern Europe with his friend, Joseph Twichell.

This is a humorous work, in which Twain plays the part of an American tourist believing that he understands everything, whilst in reality he does not.

Prior owner's ink inscription to the half-titles, 'Paul M. Franche, from Mr + Mrs Morton, May 14th 1880'.

Thirty-two pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of Volume II.

Condition

In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with some bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Rear joint of Volume I is a little cracked. Minor marks and discolouration to the boards and spines. Hinges are starting but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean with some odd spots. Half title and title page of Volume I are working loose. Front endpaper, half-title, title page, and first leaf of text of Volume II is detached but present. Prior owner's ink inscription to the half-titles.
