What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Original Binding, Signed Binding, Very Scarce, With Letter

A very scarce two volume edition of this work on the history of London, identified to the title page as a 'Special Copy', 'extended to two volumes with the insertion of a large number of extra illustrations'.

With the title page of the standard edition bound in to volume I, and continuous pagination across the two volumes.

Collated, with 53 illustrated plates to volume 1, and 44 illustrated plates to volume II, the majority of which are new additions to this special copy. Retaining the 32 vignette and full plate illustrations from the standard edition, all the work of antiquary and wood engraver Frederick William Fairholt.

In a full calf signed Bayntun's binding.

A signed letter from Lord Rosebery is tipped in to the first volume. Dated 1883, and addressed to 'Dear Sir', it refers to the 'terrible and delightful task' of constructing a 'history of manners and customs [...] to the present day'. Lord Rosebery would go on to become the Liberal Prime Minister of England from March 1894 to June 1895.
