Original Binding

This set comprises of two of Fielding's works, Tom Jones and The History of Joseph Andrews. Ex-library and therefore has several institutional stamps to the endpapers and title pages. There are also old library shelf labels to the spines. The stamps do not obstruct any text. Three plates to Tom Jones volume I, Four plates to Tom Jones Volume II, five plates to Joseph Andrews. Volume I of Tom Jones is lacking one plate. The History of Tom Jones, A Foundling is a comic novel which falls under the genres of Bildungsroman and picaresque. It is one of the earliest works of prose to be describable as a novel. Joseph Andrews was the first full-length novel of Fielding. It is a story of a good-natured footman's adventures on the road home from London with his friend and mentor, Abraham Adams.

Condition

In uniform cloth bindings with gilt stamping to spines. Externally, sound with slight rubbing and bumping to the head and tail of spine. Library shelf labels adhered to spines of all three volumes with evidence of the attempted removal. Library shelf numbers are also written to spines. Rubbing to the joints. Evidence of bookplate removal to all volumes resulting in some damage to front pastedowns. Hinges to all volumes are tender. First few pages of volumes I of Tom Jones and to Joseph Andrews are detached. Library 'Cancelled' Stamp to title page of vol II of Tom Jones. Further library stamps to the first page of Joseph Andrews, a 'Jesus College Cambridge' stamp and a 'Cancelled' stamp. Library shelf number written to title page of volume I of Tom Jones and Joseph Andrews. Internally, binding to all volumes are strained and tender in places. Binding is loosening more at the first and last few pages where others have detached. Plate to Joseph Andrews is detached but present. Jesus College Library Cambridge stamp to the verso of final endpaper to Joseph Andrews. Pages are slightly age toned with spotting to the first and last few pages. Top right corner of half title page has been removed to volume II of Tom Jones. Light occasional spotting throughout. Due to being an ex-library copy there are several ink blots, marks and pencil annotations throughout all volumes, not affecting text.
