Complete in three volumes. First edition. A complete and chronological history of the ring from 1719 to 1863. A detailed history of British boxing containing the lives of the most celebrated pugilists, full reports of battles from contemporary newspapers and periodicals, authentic portraits from original prints and paintings, biographical details, personal anecdotes, and sketches of the principal patrons of the times. Volume I is illustrated with a frontispiece and twenty-six plates, two of which are folding. Volume II is illustrated with a frontispiece and fifteen plates. Volume III is illustrated with a frontispiece and eleven plates. Written by Henry Downes Miles, a well-respected British sports writer who specialised in boxing and fighting. Bound by W. Greening, Fleet Street.

Condition

In the original brown cloth binding. Externally, smart with rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine and the odd small mark to the boards. Small splits in the cloth to the head and tail of the spines. Front hinges tender to each volume with the rear hinge of volume two failed. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting and further spotting to the first and last few pages. Contemporary ink inscription to the reverse of the title page. Bound by W. Greening, Fleet Street.
