Description

Colour Plates, First Edition, Folding Maps, Folding Plates, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

The first edition of this account of the Arctic explorations of Adolf Erik Nordenskiold, between 1858 and 1879.

Edited by Alex Leslie with Nordenskiold's permission 'from the abundant materials that were available', this work is particularly fascinating due to its publication date: Leslie's work was completed before Nordenskiold and his crew returned from the Vega Expedition. The finest achievement amongst Nordenskiold's many Arctic explorations was this expedition, where the SS Vega became the first vessel to circumnavigate the Eurasian continent, and the first ship to complete a voyage through the Northern Passage.

Leslie's introduction, therefore, hopes that this work will 'increase the readers appetite for the fuller details of the narrative which the illustrious explorer will write on his return home'.

Illustrated with a colour map frontispiece, numerous vignette illustrations, and three colour folding maps. Collated, complete.

With the former owner's inscription of J. Hollis to the half title, and an errata leaf tipped in between pages viii and ix. With a forty-one page publisher's catalogue to the rear, dated December 1879.

A detailed account of this important Scandinavian Arctic explorer's early expeditions.
