In a series of eighteen sometimes satirical character studies, Theophrastus Such focuses on various types of people he has observed in society. Written by Mary Ann Evans, known by her pen name of George Eliot, an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator, and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. W. H. Smith & Son's Subscriptions Library bookplate to front pastedown, with sold date written in ink.

Condition

In the original cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine. Minor loss to the tail of the spine. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the odd spot. Bookseller's bookplate to front pastedown.
