'A Rogue's Life' follows Frank Softly throughout his life. Frank narrates as he takes the reader from his childhood, being sent by his snobbish father to a boarding school to make connections, up to his time as a released prisoner ready to start his new life in Australia.

This is a lesser known work by the important mystery and sensation author Wilkie Collins. In his introduction, Collins states that this is a work of levity, written during a happy time during his life, whilst living in Paris, a neighbour of Charles Dickens, exploring the city with his friends and family. He explains this for the light-hearted tone of the novel.

Bookplate of W. A. Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey to the front paste down.
