Description

Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Uncommon

A new, revised edition of this sought-after study of mythology and folklore by Thomas Keightley. Originally printed in 1828, this work is the author's most well-known study and was reprinted and translated copiously until modern times, from 1978 it can be found under the title The World Guide to Gnomes, Fairies, Elves, and Other Little People. The work is said to have been praised by Jacob Grimm.

A early study of folklore, looking at the relations between the myth of a nation and the religion and mythology of other regions, ideas which Keightley was pioneer for, and were later explored further by the Brothers Grimm and others. Eventually all concluded it is impossible to trace the origins of myth back to one single source.

Illustrated with a frontispiece. An uncommon early copy.

With an interesting library bookplate to the front pastedown, 'Satyan Nasti Paro Dharma,' theosophical motto translating to 'there is no religion higher than the truth.'
