A collection of fables, from Aesop and other sources, selected and compiled by Thomas Bewick and arranged in three parts: 'Fables Extracted from Dodsley's'; 'Fables with Reflections in Prose and Verse', and 'Fables in Verse'. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding.
Illustrated throughout with Bewick's original wood engraved vignettes, and with a frontispiece and a full plate portrait of Bewick.
Also including 'The Life of Aesop' and 'An Essay Upon Fable', by Oliver Goldsmith.
Reprinted from the Newcastle Edition, which was published in 1784.
Condition
In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding, with gilt detailing. Bumping to back strip head and tail. Small splits to cloth of rear joint. Front board bright. Hinges starting, with boards holding firm. Internally, generally firmly bound though lightly strained in places. Pages age toned, with spotting throughout, and areas of foxing to first and last few leaves.
