First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Rebound

Three first edition works by Anna Brassey. Uniformly bound in a lovely half morocco binding with gilt lettering, marbled boards, and new endpapers. Anna Brassey was an English traveller and writer, best known for her popular nineteenth century travel accounts. She was also a successful photographer, and prominent member of the Royal Photographic Society. This set comprises of: "A Voyage in the 'Sunbeam'", published in 1878. Brassey's most famous work, which recounts her voyage around the world, conducted with her husband Thomas Brassey, in their yacht 'Sunbeam'. This was a hugely popular work, running through many editions and being translated into five languages. With six maps, an engraved frontispiece, eight full-page plates and numerous vignette illustrations throughout by A. Y. Bingham and engraved by G. Pearson. Collated complete. The half title page is present. "Sunshine and Storm in the East, or Cruises to Cyprus and Constantinople", published in 1880. With two maps, an engraved frontispiece, eight full-page plates and numerous illustrations throughout by A. Y. Bingham, and engraved by G. Pearson. With blind stamps throughout from the 'Royal United Service Institution Library', including to the plates. The half title page is present. "The Last Voyage", published in 1889 posthumously. This work recounts Brassey's final voyage in the 'Sunbeam', for which she was travelling to India and Australia in order to improve her poor health. During the journey, however, she contracted malaria and was buried at sea. With a frontispiece, engraved title page, two folding maps, nineteen full-page plates and numerous vignette illustrations by R. T. Pritchett. Several plates are inserted into different page numbers than mentioned in the 'List of Illustrations'. Collated complete. With four stamps from, 'East Dereham Athenaeum' towards the front of the book. Lacking the original blanks.

Condition

Uniformly bound in half morocco. Externally, excellent with minor shelf wear. Slight fading to the spines. Internally, binding slightly strained in 'The Last Voyage', but otherwise firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with some light age-toning to the edges and the odd spot and scattered handling marks throughout. Four library stamps towards the start of 'The Last Voyage', to the folding map, title page and reverse of the frontispiece. Ink inscription to the reverse of the frontispiece. Marks to the folding map at the front of the volume. Library blind stamps throughout 'Sunshine and Storm', including to the plates. Very small closed tear to the edge of the folding map at the rear the volume. Spotting to the front of "Sunbeam, including the folding map. Closed tear of about two inches to the folding map at the front of the volume, with some slight chipping to the edges. Some marks to the appendix title page at the rear. The occasional light offsetting opposite the plates. Some light marks to the fore-edge.
