Stewart served the marines for many years and founded a drapery business in the Cowcaddens as well as the Stewart & Macdonald warehouse on Buchanan Street, Glasgow. Stewart and Macdonald was established in 1826 and by the end of the 19th century it was exporting to the worldwide market. George Eliot was an English novelist, poet, journalist and one of the leading writers of the Victorian Era. It was a pen name for Mary Ann Evans, who used a male pen name in order for her works to be taken seriously.

Condition

Uniformly bound in half straight grained morocco with paper covered boards. In MacLehose bindings, as indicated from the binder's stamp to the verso of front endpapers. Externally, very smart with just minor rubbing to the head and tail of spines and to raised bands. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedowns, Robertson Buchanan Stewart. Prior owner's notations to recto of rear endpaper to volume XXIV. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout.
