This is a first American edition of The American by Henry James, published by Houghton, Mifflin and Company in Boston.
The American was originally published in serial in The Atlantic Monthly in 1876-1877. The novel is an uneasy combination of social comedy and melodrama concerning the adventures of Christopher Newman, an American businessman on his first tour of Europe.
Henry James is regarded as a key figure between literary realism and literary modernism and is considered by many to be one of the greatest novelists in the English language.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart with some light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and a mark to the spine. Internally, firmly bound with bright and clean pages.
