The work of Donald Mackenzie Wallace. Wallace was invited to visit Russia, and lived there from early 1870 until late 1875. He had a strong desire to study the Ossetes, but when he arrived in Russia, he found the civilisation of the country far more interesting than the Ossetes, and focused his studies on the Russians instead.
This work was published right before the outbreak of the Russo-Turkish War in 1877.
