The work of Donald Mackenzie Wallace. Wallace was invited to visit Russia, and lived there from early 1870 until late 1875. He had a strong desire to study the Ossetes, but when he arrived in Russia, he found the civilisation of the country far more interesting than the Ossetes, and focused his studies on the Russians instead.
This work was published right before the outbreak of the Russo-Turkish War in 1877.
With eight pages of publisher's advertisements to rear of volume II.
With the illustrated bookplate of Barrington Park to each front pastedown.
Condition
In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, otherwise externally excellent. Front hinge of volume I strained, but firmly held. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Foxing to perimeters of title page of volume I, with pages otherwise generally bright and clean, with the odd spot.
