The scarce first edition of Dr. Sigmund Theodore Stein's guide to the use of light and photography in scientific research. A classic early work of science photography, rebound in quarter calf.

Illustrated with a mounted photographic frontispiece depicting the moon, a folding colour map, and ten further photographic and lithographic plates, two in colour, each retaining the original tissue guard. featuring numerous vignette illustrations throughout. Collated, complete.

Stein dedicates the first portion of the work to an explanation of the process of photography and required equipment, and the later portion to the role of photography in disciplines including astronomy, meteorology, anatomy and microscopy.

With a contemporary inscription to the half title dedicating the work to 'Dr Mettenheimer'.

The first edition of this scarce and pioneering work on the role of photography in science and medicine.

Condition

Rebound in quarter calf, with paper covered boards and endpapers renewed. Externally, fine. Contemporary inscription to half title. Internally, firmly bound. Pages a touch age toned due to paper type, but otherwise clean.
