The first edition thus of this illustrated edition of Washington Irving's episodic novel, comprising amusing character sketches of the occupants of English manor house Bracebridge Hall. First published in 1822. From the popular American author best known for 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow'.
With an illustrated frontispiece and title page, and numerous further illustrations, from Randolph Caldecott, a popular English artist and illustrator, best known for 'The House that Jack Built' and 'The Diverting History of John Gilpin'.
With four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear, and the bookplate of accountant Benjamin Williams. Ball to the front pastedown. Ball was the father of Victorian and Edwardian era landscape painter Wilfrid Williams Ball.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail. Front hinge starting with board holding firm. Armorial bookplate to first pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with some spotting to first and last few leaves.
