What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Uncommon

In the original royal blue cloth binding with deckle edges. Algernon Charles Swinburne, although famous for his poetry on themes often perceived as taboo (such as lesbianism, cannibalism, sado-masochism and anti-theism) was also a notable literary critic. He wrote on famous names such as Victor Hugo, Shakespeare, Ben Johnson, and within this text, Charlotte Brontë. This copy features publisher's ads as well as a dedication leaf to Theodore Watts, placing this copy as a first edition, second issue. Theodore Watts, an English critic and poet in his own right was a constant friend and minder of Swinburne who he helped save from alcoholism, and Swinburne clearly expresses his admiration and gratitude to Watts within the dedication of the text.
