The first edition. In the publisher's original quarter crushed morocco binding. With a beautiful colour frontispiece, and twenty engraved plates. Collated complete. With two additional monochrome plates inserted inside. This work describes the watercolour artworks in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the world's largest museum of applied arts and design. Samuel Redgrave was an English civil servant and writer on art. Redgrave was writing this work at the time of his death in 1876. It was therefore published posthumously a year after. Other works by Redgrave include, 'A Century of Painters of the British School', and 'Dictionary of Artists of the English School'. The half title page is present. The pages from the front free endpaper to the frontispiece are loose. With a bookseller's label for, 'James Gemmell', to the rear paste-down.

Condition

In the publisher's original quarter crushed morocco binding. Externally, smart with shelf wear to the edges and spine. Rubbing to the spine. Spine is darkened. Light marks to the front board, heavier to the rear board. Marks to the spine. Light marks to the paste-downs and free endpapers. The front free endpaper is loose. Offsetting to the reverse of the rear free endpaper. Internally, the front blanks, half title page and frontispiece are loose. Otherwise, generally firmly bound. Light age-toning to the edges but the text remains bright and clear. Scattered spots throughout. Handling marks throughout. The occasional offsetting surrounding the plates. Mark to page 185.
