Illustrated, Leather Binding, Prize Binding, Rebound

Samuel Smile's youngest son was advised to take a long sea journey to recover from lung disease. He voyaged to Australia, returning by the Pacific route via Honolulu and San Francisco, and proceeding by railway across the Rocky Mountains to New York. He kept a journal of his experiences, which was edited by Samuel Smiles, and published first in 1871. 

Illustrated with a frontispiece and other illustrations in text. 

In a charming full calf school prize binding, awarded to John Godwin King for music in 1877. 

Condition

Re-bound in a full calf binding with four raised bands and gilt tooling to the spine. Externally sound with only minor shelf wear and minor rubbing to the spine and extremities. With a school prize bookplate to the front pastedown, dated 1877. Inscribed John Godwin King to the front blank page. Internally, firmly bound. With some spotting to the first and last few leaves, otherwise the pages are generally bright and clean. Illustrated with a frontispiece and other illustrations in text.
