A lovely set of John Richard Green's masterpieces on the complete history of England, often considered to be one of the best narratives of the history of the English people, putting social, industrial, and moral progress of the country at the forefront. 

Uniformly and beautifully bound in half morocco with gilt detailing by Riviere & Son, with their binder's stamp to the verso of the front free-endpaper. 

Included in this set are the following works. 

A History of the English People in four volumes, narrating the history of England from the year 419 A.D. to the Napoleonic Wars in 1815. An early edition of this work published in 1877 (the first edition of this work was published in 1874 under the title A Short History of the English People). Including fifteen illustrated maps, many of which are folding and in colour, collated and complete. 

The Conquest of England, the first edition of this work published in 1883, the same year as Green's death. Narrating in great detail the Norman conquest of England, providing a complete historical picture from the year 750 A.D. until 1071. Including an engraved frontispiece portrait of Green, as well as nine illustrated maps, collated and complete. 

The Making of England, an early edition of this work published in 1885 (the first edition was published in 1881). Providing an in-depth the early history of England from the year 419 A.D. to 829 A.D. Including twenty-nine illustrated maps, many of which are folding, collated and complete. 

John Richard Green (1837-1883) was a nineteenth-century English historian who began his career as a clergyman and was eventually was appointed librarian at Lambeth. His histories of England are considered his masterpieces. He began writing A Short History of England when he was given just six months to live, though he later expanded upon it when he realised he had more time. 

Each volume in this set contains the bookplate of Alexander Outhwaite Joy to the front pastedown. 

Condition

Uniformly and beautifully bound in half morocco with gilt detailing by Riviere & Son, with their binder's stamp to the verso of the front free-endpaper. Externally, lovely, with just some light fading to the spines. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. Internally, all volumes firmly bound. The odd spot to the pages, which are otherwise bright and clean.
