The first edition of British scholar, historian, and Christian theologian George Rawlinson's study of Parthian history, discussing the geography and history of the Sassanian, or New Persian, empire. Discussing the history of Western Asia 'from the third century of our era to the middle of the seventh'.

Illustrated from 'ancient and modern sources' and with a colour frontispiece, folding colour map, numerous vignette woodcuts and seventeen further plates. Collated, complete.

With a two page publisher's advertisement to the start of the work, and bookplate to front pastedown stating 'Melton Wold'.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. bumping to back strip head and tail, with light fading to board perimeters. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound. Significant tear to frontispiece tissue guard. Pages bright and generally clean, with the odd spot.
