Publishers' Original Binding, Signed
Signed by the author to the head of the half-title. Inscribed, to the Marchioness of Tweeddale, inscription dated June 29th 1877. The Marchioness at this time was Julia Mackenzie of Seaforth, who married Arthur, the Marquess, in 1873. This work is an interesting biography of James FitzJames, the first Duke of Berwick. He was the illegitimate son of King James II and his mistress Arabella Churchill. FitzJames went to serve in the French army after his father was exiled, and fought in the battles of Steenkerque. He was highly esteemed for his courage and abilities whilst within the army. Written by Charles Townshend Wilson. Wilson also wrote 'Our Veterans of 1842' and 'The Duke of Berwick'.
Condition
Rebacked with the original publisher's cloth binding laid on. Externally, smart. Light marking to the boards and spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd scattered spot, mostly to the first and last few pages. Prior owner's ink inscription and stamps to the half-title.
