Two early editions of this large and extensive dictionary of Christian antiquities edited by William Smith and Samuel Cheetham, originally published in 1875.
The first volume, A-J was published in 1876, while the second, K-Z was published in 1880.
This large set provides a complete dictionary of the organisations of the Church, its officers, legislation, discipline, and revenues; the social life of Christians; their worship and ceremonial, with accompanying music, vestments, instruments, vessels, and insignia; their sacred places; their architecture and other forms of Art; their symbolism; their sacred days and seasons the graves of Catacombs in which they were laid to rest.
Illustrated with various engravings on wood in text throughout.
Condition
Rebound in full cloth binding and new endpapers, with the original boards and spine preserved. Externally, very smart with only minor shelf wear and a slight bumping to the extremities. The cloth is slightly rubbed to the back board and spine of volume one, with a faint damp marking to the spine of volume two. An ex-school book with the school stamps to the verso of the title page and to the first page of each volume. Internally, firmly bound. With the odd minor faint spotting to the occasional leaf, particularly to the first and last few, although the leaves are generally bright and clean throughout. Illustrated with various wood cuts in text.
