Description

Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was a Scottish novelist and poet. Scott remains a celebrated figure in Scottish literary history, and the landscape of Scotland features heavily in his works. He was also a political figure, prominent within the Tory establishment, and served as President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh for twelve years, between 1820 and 1832. He was a member of Clan Scott, a prominent Scottish clan. This set is complete in twenty five volumes, and comprises novels including 'Waverley', 'Old Mortality', 'Rob Roy' and 'Ivanhoe'.

All volumes are illustrated with a full frontispiece illustration and a vignette illustrated title page.

In a marvellous full tree calf binding with wonderful gilt spines and edges.

Contains a bookplate addressed to William Russell alongside the motto and emblem of the Russell family, an extremely prominent noble family that has included dukes, Prime Ministers, philosophers and politicians.

Condition

In a full tree calf binding. Externally very smart, chipping to the heads of the spines of volumes 1, 4, 5, 11, 14 and 23, otherwise minor shelfwear. Each volume contains an ownership bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally firmly bound, pages bright and clean.
