This set includes a biographical account from Lamb's schooldays, to his sister's mental illness, his travels, commentary on his friends and companions, and his working life. With examples of correspondence to many important figures including: Coleridge, Southey, Wordsworth, Moxon, Miss Hutchinson, and many others. Includes a full catalogue of Lamb's written works, including Essays of Elia, Tales From Shakespeare, Mrs Leicester's School, as well as criticisms, reviews, and verses. With notes and illustrations by Percy Hetherington Fitzgerald, an Anglo-Irish author, critic, painter, and sculptor.
Condition
Bound in half black calf with patterned boards. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine and the odd mark to the board. Light loss of the paper covering the rear board of volume one. Hinges lightly starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with light age toning to the endpapers. Previous owner's bookplate to the front endpaper of some volumes.
