Description

Published by William and Robert Chambers, a publishing partnership of Scottish brothers, both influential in politics and the sciences in Victorian Scotland. Renowned for their important encyclopaedia collection, reputable for accuracy. As Lord Provost of Edinburgh, Sir William Chambers is also remembered for having given the world famous West Highland White Terrier Greyfriars Bobby a collar and paying for his license.

Presented by the Council of King's College, London to John Alfred Curtis as a prize for proficiency in an Examination, dated 1876.

Beautifully finely bound, with gilt decoration to the spines and the emblem of King's College gilt to the covers.

Chambers' Cyclopaedia of English Literature, edited by Robert Chambers, is lavishly illustrated throughout with vignette illustrations and complete in two volumes. It is undated; dated from Jisc and the bookplate.

Chambers' English Dictionary also has vocabularies of Scottish words and phrases, as well as Americanisms. Edited by James Donald.

A marvellous collection of important Victorian reference works.

Condition

In a full crushed morocco binding. Externally very smart, with just a little general wear to the joints and tails of the spine. Prize bookplate to the front pastedown of vol I and the English Dictionary. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with just the odd spot.
