Complete three volume set, 1875 Edition 'dedicated to the memory of Richard Bentley', a friend of Richard Barham's who published the books. 

Illustrations include one illustrated engraving within the preface to the Second Edition. 

Bound in half calf on marbled boards.

This is an amusing collection of myths, legends, and ghost stories, supposedly written by 'Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor'. This stories were originally printed as part of a series in the 'Bentley's Miscellany' and 'New Monthly' magazines, but they proved to be so popular that they were compiled into books. 

Volume I contains stories such as 'The Spectre of Tappington', 'The Ghost', and 'The Witches' Frolic'. 

Volume II contains stories such as 'Sir Rupert the Fearless- A Legend of Germany', 'The Smuggler's Leap', and 'The Dead Drummer'. 

Volume III contains stories such as 'The Blasphemer's Warning', 'Hints for an Historical Play', and 'As I Laye A-Thynkynge'. 

Written by Richard Harris Barham (1788-1845), an English cleric, novelist, and humorous poet. He is best known for his 'The Ingoldsby Legends', and is also a character in George MacDonald Fraser's historical novel, 'Flashman's Lady'. 

Collated, complete.

Condition

bound in half calf on marbled boards. Externally, generally smart. Some rubbing and wear to the extremities and the spines of all volumes, with fading and marks to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very clean throughout, with light age-toning to the pages.
