Comprises a translation of the writings of Marco Polo, describing his travels through Asia at the end of the thirteenth century, in particular his time spent at the court of Kublai Khan, emperor of the Mongol Empire. Polo was a Venetian explorer, remembered for bringing Europeans an insight into the Eastern world, until then a mystery. The work was extremely important and popular, and has been translated since its conception.

This work, first published in 1871, won its author the Founder's Gold Medal of the Royal Geographical Society.

With the bookplate of Charles Douglas Medley (1870-1963), the author of 'The Altar of the Dead', 'The Spoils of Poynton', 'Lady Barbarina and 'The Reverberator'.

The second edition. 

Illustrated profusely with vignettes, full plates, maps and folding maps. Each volume contains sixteen plates, including numerous folding plates and maps. Collated, complete.

Condition

In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with a chip to the head of volume I, both volumes a little bumped to the head and tail of the spine. Frontispiece of volume I is loose but present. Each volume has two ownership bookplates; one to the front pastedown, and one to the front endpaper. Internally generally firmly bound, front hinge is strained but firm on volume II. Pages are generally bright and clean, bar the occasional instance of spotting.
