An early edition of this work, bound in full calf with gilt detailing. 

Illustrated with fourteen vibrant colour plates of chromolithographic prints, as well as upwards of four hundred engravings on wood throughout the text. Collated complete. 

This work explores the state of military and religion during the Middle Ages. Whilst the first half looks at war, armies, chivalry and crusades, the second half of the work explores ceremonies, the secular clergy, pilgrimages and other areas of religion. 

Written by French author and journalist, Paul Lacroix, who is known best by his pseudonym P. L. Jacob or Bibliophile Jacob. 


Condition

In full calf binding with gilt detailing. Externally, smart, with offsetting to the front board and fading to the spine. Slight rubbing and bumping to the extremities. A few marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean. With scattered spotting only to the first and last few leaves.
