Description

Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Signed

Edwin Landseer (1802-1873) designed the lion sculptures which sit at the base of Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square; he also has works in the Tate Britain, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Wallace Collection. It was rumoured that Landseer possessed the ability of painting with both hands simultaneously: he was an extremely fast painter, but also known to put off completing certain commissions for years at a time.

This edition was written and owned by F. G. Stephens (1827-1907), a British art critic who was so dissatisfied by his own lack of artistic skill that he instead became a critic of art, although he does still have three paintings up in the Tate Gallery, London. He was the art critic and subsequently art editor for the Athenaeum between 1860 and 1901. He also wrote about the likes of Thomas Gainsborough, Sir Anthony van Dyck, Thomas Bewick and Edward Burne-Jones.

Contains twenty four illustrations, which are reproductions of the works of Landseer.
