A very scarce first edition in the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding.

Illustrated with a chromolithographic frontispiece, and with six monochrome engraved plates. Collated, complete.

K. A. Buist discusses birds and their cages, with chapters dedicated to cleanliness, food, illness, breeding, and general health. With further focus on bird taming, performing birds, varieties of canaries, and 'hints on foreign birds'.

With a thirty-four page publisher's catalogue to the rear, dated September 1874.

Lacking half title.

A delightful Victorian era guide to the keeping of pet birds.

Condition

In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, otherwise externally excellent. Front hinge strained, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean, with only the odd light handling mark or instance of spotting. Lacking half title.
