Description

Colour Plates, Early Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

Scarce in the original publisher's binding, the cloth to this volume has remained unusually bright. Illustrated, with a frontispiece and ten further coloured lithographs. These plates are by J G Keulemans. Keulemans was a Dutch ornithological illustrator. His drawings feature in many famed ornithology books throughout the nineteenth century as well as for 'The Ibis' and 'The Proceedings of the Zoological Soxiety'. He is noted for the detail in his art, and therefore he received numerous commissions. The second edition of this work, published the same year as the first edition. Translated into Egnlish by H M Labouchere and W Jesse. Brehm's father, Christian Ludwig Brehm was also an ornithologist and he had an extensive collection of over 9,000 birds. This meant that Brehm was interested in zoology from a young age. Brehm wrote this work to appeal to the general reader, and to educate the masses on birds. The translator's preface notes 'a more intimate knowledge of the beauties of Creation inevitably conduces to delicacy of ideas and tenderness of feeling'. It was not intended to be a scientific work, but an appreciation and homage to the bird. To his preface Brehm notes that this book is 'entertaining as well as instructive'. This work is formed of ten parts, which look at the physical life of the bird, their homes and functions, their domestic and social life, in addition to the bird in the context of their relationship with humans. A charming ornithological work, written by a popular nineteenth century figure in this field.
