The first edition of John S. Roberts's account of the history of travel and adventure in Africa.

Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, illustrated title page, folding colour map, and nine further plates.

Volume II illustrated with a frontispiece and nine further plates.

Volume III illustrated with a frontispiece and nine further plates.

With a small number of further vignette illustrations to each volume.

The author discusses the exploratory missions and adventures of such renowned explorers as pioneering Christian missionary Dr. David Livingstone, and his rescuer, Henry Morton Stanley, alongside further historical and contemporary individuals.

Further chapters examine subjects including the Madagascar Slave Trade, the Sahara desert, and the Sudanese capital of Khartoum.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding, with gilt detailing. Bumping to back strip heads and tails, with fading to back strip. Rear board of volume I detached, with front board strained and only loosely held. Damp staining to head of volume II front board, penetrating to first few leaves. Volume II hinges starting, with rear board strained and loosely held. Volume III damp stained to rear board, with head of rear joint and tail of front joint starting, and boards holding firm. First four leaves of volume I detached but present. Otherwise, generally firmly bound with one gathering working loose. Volume II binding lightly strained throughout, with two gatherings working loose to volume III. Pages bright and generally clean, with damp staining to one frontispiece and scattered instances of light spotting throughout.
